You've set aside the time, you selected your playlist and you're ready to go. Then, you realize you still have to come up with a workout and DO it. This is where most people get discouraged. They either don't know what to do and end up doom-scrolling while trying to find a workout, or they aren't motivated enough to do the workout on their own once they actually find a workout. When clients come to me with this problem, I always tell them to find the activity that keeps them coming back. Find a workout that brings you joy and stick with it. Because at the end of the day, it's movement that matters most. Yes, having a specific plan for specific goals is great, but it isn't essential for overall whole health. All movement counts, and some movement is better than no movement.
If you have kids, working out at home can be especially challenging. Again, my advice is the same. Find a workout that works for you. Sometimes, my kids allow me to do an entire work at home. They may even join me at times, and its super cute and even motivating to help teach them about fitness. However, if we're being honest, most of the time, they interrupt me with arguing or ask me for a snack constantly. When this happens, I try my best to just brush it off and move on from it. It's not the end of the world to miss one workout. Other times, I think of ways to change course. Sometimes that means going for a walk with the kids and the stroller. Sometimes that means gardening with the kids and the chickens. Sometimes that means jumping on the trampoline with the kids. It is what it is. As a parent, you have to work with what you've got and make the best of it.
On the other hand, especially as a parent, you have to make time for yourself and your mental health. In my opinion, one of the best options out there is group fitness (especially if they provide child care). Having a coach there at a specific time with a workout already planned for you is amazing. All you have to do is show up, which I realize is the hardest part most of the time. But if you can get yourself there, you are almost always going to leave feeling so much better. If you need a group fitness class to join, come see me at the Y in Covington!
For the days that you do get the motivation to workout at home, here is a very quick workout that you can do with just your body. Be sure to warm up your body beforehand. If you need any ideas, here is a quick Basic Warm Up Video.
Your Workout:
Set a time for 10 minutes and do as many rounds as you can of the following exercises (rest as needed):
14 Pop Squats
16 Mountain Climbers (per side)
Be sure to cool down and stretch after your workout. If you need any ideas, here is a Quick Cool Down & Stretch Video.
If you're feeling extra adventurous, I suggest using the SmartWOD app. I use it as a timer for my group fitness classes, and I occasionally use it to help create workouts when I'm having a creativity block. I use it quite often when I'm on vacation so that I don't fall into the scenario I mentioned in the beginning of this post. Nothing is worse than over preparing just to fall short on creating a workout.
If you enjoy watching a full length video rather than counting your own reps and such, I have options for this as well! Check them out HERE!
